Discover how "agile" coaching transforms hurdles into opportunities!
How does one confront a situation that is both new and challenging, where the solution remains unclear, almost like a misty, intangible thought?
In conversations with several startup founders, who frequently encounter novel challenges, I've come to understand their ideal scenario: to locate an expert who has navigated precisely their situation and can offer a specific hint, a clear action to overcome the challenge.
However, discovering such a magical expert is nearly impossible (I explain why later in the post). In the absence of this, one might initially consider alternatives like reading a book, rethinking and deepening one's own approach, consulting someone with a similar experience, or gathering more information from the internet (expert groups or communities of interest).
These are valid methods if your challenge has been already somewhat explored and shared by others.
Let's assume you find a recommendation. Why aren't these shared experiences and recommendations directly applicable to your unique situation? Why is that?
The reason is this: your situation, with its specific resources, knowledge, history, and expertise, likely differs greatly from those described in books, online sources, or by experts. Furthermore, the selection bias (the tendency to only note successful solutions while overlooking the numerous others who failed with the same approach, thus hiding valuable lessons) may lead you to mistakenly believe that a solution that worked for somebody else will also work for yours. So, even if you receive sound advice on addressing your challenge, it often requires significant personal adaptation to suit your particular circumstances and problem.
Does this mean there's no way to find help in difficult situations?
Quite the contrary:
A person who can ask you numerous questions in a structured way and an unbiased manner, listen to your answers without judgment, and help you gain a deeper understanding of your situation – all without jumping to conclusions and presenting ready-made solutions – will assist you in crafting a solution that perfectly fits your unique challenge, incorporating all your available knowledge and expertise.
Such individuals are readily found; they are known as coaches.
